I use a Mellita type of coffee maker when there's just water to boil. I've also made "Cowboy Coffee" on occasion--Bring a pot of water to a boil, pour in ground coffee and let steep for a few minutes. The finishing touch is to add in a cup of cold water. The cold water sinks all the grounds to the bottom of the pot and then you can pour off the coffee into mugs. It is a surprisingly good way to make a cup of Joe. :D

that would take a lot of battery power to make coffee that way. we have one of those little single burner coleman stoves that we have in the ar-one that works well for coffee making and heating soup and other things. works well and is small and light weight. I think some people use a French press but do not have a clue on what it actually is.

Never tried to make coffee without hook ups.

Also don't have a cook top, so basically I'm no help and have no input.

Can you make it off battery power with an inverter?

here is what we brew our coffee in when we have no electricity. it is an old west bend 18 cup. works very well and coffee tastes good. with our percolator, coffee always had a bitter taste because it got too hot over the stove while percolating.
